Covid vaccines: "they are causing heart attacks in the young".

A heart outline beside a steady ECG trace and a vaccine vial A heart outline on the left, a calm, even ECG trace in the middle and a plain vaccine vial on the right, drawn at the same size and weight. Large studies found no rise in heart attacks from COVID-19 vaccines; rare, mostly mild heart inflammation is a known, monitored side effect.

As forwarded

"Covid vaccines are causing sudden heart attacks in young people." Variants: every gym death and wedding-dance collapse is "the vaccine"; "the vaccine maker admitted it"; vaccinated people have "a time bomb in their blood".

Recurring since 2022 and amplified by videos of young people collapsing. In mid-2025 a state chief minister publicly blamed Covid vaccines for more than 20 heart-attack deaths in one district within about a month; the Union Health Ministry called such claims "false and misleading", said "Covid-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death in young adults", citing ICMR and AIIMS studies, and warned that the claims could fuel vaccine hesitancy [S1]. The "maker admitted it" variant refers to court filings about a rare clotting disorder with the adenovirus-vector vaccine; the filings were not opened, and the clotting evidence is below. Verdict

Unsupported

Covid vaccines can, rarely, cause heart inflammation (mostly with mRNA vaccines, mostly in young men, usually mild) and, very rarely, a clotting disorder with the adenovirus-vector type, both within days to weeks of a dose. But India's own nationwide study of sudden deaths in 18–45-year-olds found vaccination did not raise the risk and was linked to lower risk, while binge drinking, drug use, a family history of sudden death, very hard exercise and past severe Covid were linked to higher risk. Chest pain, fainting or breathlessness at any age: call 112 or 108.

Established

On the rare side effects:Heart inflammation after mRNA vaccines and a very rare clotting disorder after adenovirus-vector vaccines are real and recognised, within days to weeks of a dose.

What the evidence says

Established

What is right: rare heart inflammation. Heart-muscle inflammation (myocarditis) after mRNA vaccines has "most frequently been seen" in adolescent and young adult males "within 7 days after receiving the second dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine", and "most patients ... have experienced resolution of symptoms" by hospital discharge. [S5] In England (42.8 million vaccinated people aged 13 and over), the links were strongest in males under 40 for all vaccines; for one mRNA vaccine's second dose in males under 40, the estimate was 97 extra myocarditis events per million, compared with 16 per million after a positive Covid test. [S6] Myocarditis is not the same as a heart attack, which is a blocked coronary artery.

Established

What is right: a very rare clotting disorder. Clotting with low platelets (TTS) can follow adenovirus-vector vaccines, including the type given for most doses in India. WHO's vaccine safety committee (April 2021) described the risk as very low, about four per million adults in UK data and about 1 in 100,000 in EU estimates, with onset 4 to 20 days after vaccination, and said a mechanism specific to the vaccine platform "cannot be excluded". [S8] A data-journalism summary of India's national adverse-events committee reports (2021–2023) states that of 2,712 serious events reviewed, 408 were classed as consistently causally linked, including 38 TTS cases, and that over 1,000 of 1,110 deaths were judged coincidental or unclassifiable. [S9]

India's best evidence on sudden death. An ICMR matched case-control study across 47 tertiary hospitals in 19 states and union territories compared 729 unexplained sudden deaths in apparently healthy adults aged 18–45 (October 2021 to March 2023) with 2,916 matched controls. Any vaccine dose was linked to lower odds of sudden death (adjusted OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.37–0.92), as were two doses (0.51, 0.28–0.91); one dose showed no link (1.00, 0.73–1.36), and vaccination within 42 days before death showed no significant link (0.53, 0.25–1.14; only 22 exposed cases). Higher odds were found with a family history of sudden death (2.53, 1.52–4.21), binge drinking in the 48 hours before (5.29, 2.57–10.89), recreational drug use (2.92, 1.12–7.71), vigorous physical activity in the 48 hours before (3.7, 1.36–10.05) and past Covid hospitalisation (3.8, 1.36–10.61 in one model; not significant in another). The authors list proxy respondents for cases, recall of some vaccination dates, possible misclassification, a smaller-than-planned sample and an observational design as limitations. [S2]

Unsupported

Heart attacks after vaccination in India. Among 1,578 heart-attack patients at a Delhi government hospital (August 2021 to August 2022), 68.8% of them vaccinated, vaccinated patients had lower adjusted odds of death at 30 days (OR 0.58, 0.47–0.71) and six months (0.54, 0.44–0.65), and there was "no specific clustering" of heart attacks at any particular time after vaccination. [S3] A preliminary AIIMS–ICMR autopsy-based review of 300 sudden deaths, mostly under 40, reported heart disease linked to smoking, alcohol and blocked arteries as the commonest finding, with no link to vaccination found so far. [S4]

Supported

Why the claim feels true. Heart attacks and sudden deaths happened in young people before Covid too; with almost everyone vaccinated, almost every death will be in a vaccinated person, and phone videos make collapses far more visible. The ICMR study points to other, modifiable risks and to Covid infection itself. [S2]

What to do instead

  1. Chest pain or pressure, breathlessness, fainting, palpitations or collapse at any age: call 112 or 108. If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start chest compressions. (See Cough CPR.)

  2. Within a few weeks of any vaccine dose, chest pain, breathlessness or palpitations, or a severe persistent headache, severe stomach pain or leg swelling: see a doctor promptly and mention the date of the dose. [S5][S8]

  3. Lower the real risks: avoid binge drinking and recreational drugs, build up to hard exercise gradually, and if a close relative died suddenly young, ask a doctor about heart screening. [S2]

  4. Do not refuse other vaccines because of this claim; the rare Covid-vaccine signals are specific to those vaccines and limited in time. [S5][S8]
